About this clinic

This clinic is indended for athletes are truly serious about roller hockey - in particular, those who aspire to be successful 14U/16U tournament or advanced league players, or those who are already playing 14U/16U travel hockey and want to become even better athletes. This clinic focuses on advanced technical skills and strategic/positional play to prepare you for the 2005-06 season. To take part in this clinic, you must have proven, solid skills that you intend to take to an even higher level. Expect to work very hard! (That's not a marketing line. We are not kidding.)

Ron's goal in this clinic is to build defensive-minded players who operate effectively on a 14U/16U team, an age division where skaters must learn to handle smart but physical hockey. Among the skills and techniques Ron will teach are:

  • Individualized focus on improving technical skills through intensive drills for skating, passing, and stick-handling
  • Handling physical play while keeping your head in the game
  • Practicing discipline and patience in front of the net
  • Defensive strategies for both forwards and defensemen, with an emphasis on forechecking and backchecking against fast, physical opponents
  • Effective techniques for handling team strategies such as breakouts, power plays, and penalty kills
  • Advanced skills for recognizing and acting on scoring opportunities

This clinic will repeat each six weeks - adding more advanced skills and practice with each repetition - over the course of the year. (Attending more than one clinic is not required. However, if you decide to continue with the clinic, you can expect to attend 3-4 sessions between November 2005 and June 2006.)

Off-surface training

Ron will be making recommendations for off-surface training to increase strength and endurance. He will expect students to act on these recommendations outside of clinic time.

Number and age of students

We typically accept no more than 14 students per clinic so that Ron is able to give students more individualized attention. Students typically fall in the 14U and young 16U age groups. We will offer a separate 14U and 16U clinics if registrations are sufficient.

Cost

We expect the cost to be a maximum of $130 per six-week session. However, Hockey Seed clinics are "exact cost" clinics. This means that the cost is based on rink and instructor costs, divided by the number of students. Hockey Seed is run by parent volunteers (Cheri and Walt Zubak) who don't take a cut from the fee. You will be notified of the exact cost in advance of the clinic.

Please contact Cheri to register before the clinic begins. We need to know how many skaters will attend so we can inform everyone of the cost of the clinic before it begins. Also, at time, we will defer the starting date of the clinic until we have sufficient numbers.
